Devastating start to the successful device family, Microsoft’s Surface has evolved a lot. From Surface Pro in a tablet form factor to the Surface Book in a laptop form factor and now enormous Surface Studio in PC form factor, each and every device has won the users heart but do you know the Surface we know today was never the Microsoft’s original Surface. Original Surface (renamed to PixelSense) was a Windows system as a ‘table’ form factor. You read it right, ‘table’. Many of you must be remembering Iron Man 2 scene where Tony Stark is using his table computing device to search for Natalie Rushman (Black Widow) while she is busy fighting Happy. If you have imagined owing one of them and waiting for some future tech for your dream come true then you are late. That device was there, built, available to small market and then vanishes.
First announced at D5 conference (May 29, 2007) and became available to customers at 2008 was a giant leap towards breaking the barriers of defined computational devices. It had 30 inch 4:3 rear projection display, integrated with 5 IR cameras to see the fingers and the objects and had 52 multi-touch support. It can be used by multiple users at the same time through any direction as OS was designed for the same user experience. It is powered by Windows Vista based OS with 360 degree multiuser application design. It didn’t require any keyboard or mouse and users too need to training on how to use this device. As according to its categories this device follows under the NUI (Natural User Interface), a successor to GUI. It was developed as for commercial purpose, even Disneyland launched it in Tomorrowland, Innovations Dream House. Even Samsung came up with Samsung SUR40 for Microsoft Surface at CSE 2011.
As for hardware specifications it contains Intel Core 2 Duo 2.13 GHz Processor, ATI Radeon X1650 – 256 MB, 2 GB DDR2 RAM, 160 GB HDD, 1024*768 resolution with 4:3 aspect ratio, 4 USB ports, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and infrared. Four important components in the PixelSense interface: direct interaction, multi-touch contact, a multi-user experience, and object recognition.
Direct Interaction – Ability to just reach out and touch the device for the interaction without the use of mouse and keyboard.
Multi-Touch Contact – Multi-Touch up to 52 interactions can be recognized at a time.
Multiuser Experience – Multiple users can use the device at the same time from different directions with applications oriented to themselves. All the different oriented applications work as independent to each other.
Object Recognition – It can detect and recognize the object placed on it. You can simply draw the digital painting in the device using a physical paint brush. Contrary to traditional conventions it usage cameras for the input rather than touchscreen of any technology.
There was 850 nanometer wavelength LED light source aimed at the surface. Touch is sensed by the reflected lights, even the device placed is recognized by the same way. To make it more future like you can simply interact with all your windows mobile 6.5 files just by placing it on the top of it. It reads all the device data by NFC and categorize it by the file type and shows it on the screen. No need of any effort, just place your device and it’s done. As simple as that.
