We have a habit of copying someone rather than doing stuff by ourselves. At school or college, we copy the assignments, homework, even each other acts to become more famous. We want people to know us, only us. Well, that’s true for the corporate world too, and why not they once were students too or today’s students are the one who is going to run corporate tomorrow. There is always someone with some innovative idea and with the help of that idea that a person creates something unique for customers. There comes the worst part, the part where the only thing remains is the survival of the fittest. Like in the food chain bigger fish eats the smaller one, in the same way bigger company either submerging the smaller company to themselves by buying them or try to destroy them by copying their uniqueness to their products. Lets discuss about one of the biggest victim or copycat, ‘Snapchat’.
Snapchat & Facebook
It is a social network app for iOS and android where user can share their pics or video which automatically disappears after 24 hours. Launched in September, 2011 by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy and Reggie Brown, it is gaining popularity among youngsters like fire in the wood. Thing which you should have guessed by now, is the biggest rival of ‘Snapchat’, which is ‘Facebook’. Facebook is the biggest social network at the current time, not just because everyone usage it, it’s because Facebook also owns biggest photo sharing app ‘Instagram’ and biggest chatting client ‘WhatsApp’. The only thing it lack is ‘Twitter’, but nevertheless, by the combine power of three biggest social network platform, Facebook literally rules the Social Network world and always tries to gain a monopoly on its business. This is where Snapchat came into the picture. By the rising popularity of Snapchat, Facebook tries to buy it, since the end of 2012. Snapchat CEO has rejected the offer of $3 Billion. After that Facebook is trying to implement Snapchat features to its own companies app. From Instagram to WhatsApp and Now Facebook messenger, each one has their versions of Snapchat inbuilt to their apps.
“There are very few people in the world who get to build a business like this,”
Snapchat CEO – Evan Spiegel
If you are a regular user of Facebook Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp (surely you are), then you must have noticed one similar feature appearing to all. Instagram and Facebook Stories and WhatsApp new Status, all have the same concept upload pics and video with filters available which will be automatically destroyed in 24 hours. This feature was originally available in Snapchat as Snapchat stories. You can either upload a pic-video edit it as you like or take it from in app camera. Facebook wants to let the people’s camera “do the talking”. Beside stories Facebook other copy cat feature is filters and animations which you can apply to your stories.
“We want to make it fast, fun and easy for people to share creative photos and videos with whomever they choose, for however long they choose — and the more we share with each other, the more open and connected our community can be,” Connor Hayes, a Facebook product manager, wrote in a blog post as part of the Facebook Stories rollout.
Despite being the smaller fish Snapchat also copied something from the Facebook. Snapchat has given “Search” option to search through the content they have posted in the app. It is being achieved through the machine learning. Users can use the “Search” feature to find the posts (Snaps as in the Sanpchat terminology) related to any local event or topics such as Lego.
